My Inquiry
What has the COVID-19 Pandemic taught us about the current function of our education system?
How can cognitive load theory be used to support an intentional, successful learning environment?
How can cognitive load theory be used to support an intentional, successful learning environment?
Where Did I Start?
Throughout my time in Legacy, my inquiry has grown and changed to better fit my interests. Although I have now chosen to focus on Cognitive Load Theory and the impact of COVID-19 on our current education system, my initial inquiry focused on the relationship between the cognitive development of students and educational standards. Attached below is my initial inquiry proposal.

What Have I Learned?
The initial part of my inquiry focused on the science behind learning. I spent Term 1 completing an edX course that provided an introduction to concepts such as memory, cognitive load, learning strategies, and motivation within the classroom. I compiled an overview of these concepts under "The Science Behind Learning" section of my website and reflected on my learning during three short podcast episodes.
My Final Project
As a result of my time in Legacy, I have been inspired to explore two questions:
What has the COVID-19 pandemic taught us about the current function of our education system?
How can cognitive load theory be used to support an intentional, successful learning environment?
How can cognitive load theory be used to support an intentional, successful learning environment?
I plan to complete my podcast series by investigating these two branches of my "Science Behind Learning" inquiry.
Nipmuc's Portrait of a Learner
"I can analyze the situation in order to identify the problem.""I can recognize how my own emotions, thoughts, and values can influence my behavior."My work in Legacy is defined by Nipmuc's "Portrait of a Learner". This is a selection of competencies, defined by a series of "I can" statements that showcase what we as a school community have deemed to be a "successful" student. My final inquiry relates to two of these competencies: Solution Seeker and Mindful Learner.
